Prosecutors asked court to sentence DJ Toxxyk to five years in prison.

Rwandan prosecutors have asked the High Court in Nyarugenge to sentence popular entertainer DJ Toxxyk to five years in prison and fine him 2,210,000 Frw.

The appeal comes after prosecutors said the punishment he previously received was too light considering the seriousness of the case.

DJ Toxxyk, whose real name is Shema Arnaud de Bosscher, was arrested on 21 December 2025 after a road accident in Nyarugenge District that caused the death of a police officer.

Investigators also reportedly found marijuana at his home during the investigation.

Charges Against DJ Toxxyk

Prosecutors charged DJ Toxxyk with several offenses, including:

  • Involuntary manslaughter
  • Drug-related offenses
  • Fleeing after causing an accident
  • Refusing alcohol testing

On 4 May 2026, the Kicukiro Primary Court found him guilty of all charges.

The court sentenced him to:

  • Three months of community service, suspended for six months
  • A fine of 1,050,000 Frw

After the ruling, DJ Toxxyk was released from Nyarugenge Prison in Mageragere.

However, prosecutors were not satisfied with the decision.

Why Prosecutors Appealed

On 6 May 2026, prosecutors officially appealed the sentence before the High Court in Nyarugenge.

During the hearing held on 15 May 2026, prosecutors argued that the lower court did not fully consider:

  • The seriousness of the crimes
  • The death caused by the accident
  • The purpose of punishment under the law

They said the penalties given to DJ Toxxyk were too small and could not teach a lesson to society.

The prosecution also stressed that the victim was a police officer who was on duty at the time of the accident.

According to prosecutors, this made the case even more serious.

Defense Lawyers Reject Prosecutors’ Arguments

DJ Toxxyk told the court that he regrets what happened and accepts responsibility for his actions.

His lawyer, Me Uwamahoro Marie Josée, defended the original sentence and argued that the lower court followed the law correctly.

She explained that each punishment given by the court matched legal requirements for the offenses involved.

The defense also criticized prosecutors for requesting harsher punishments during the appeal process.

Another lawyer, Me Murangwa Faustin, argued that judges have the legal right to reduce punishments depending on the circumstances of a case.

He asked the court to reject the prosecution’s appeal.

Court Decision Coming Soon

The High Court in Nyarugenge is expected to announce its final decision on 22 May 2026 at 1 PM.

The case continues attracting public attention because DJ Toxxyk is a well-known figure in Rwanda’s entertainment industry.

Many people online remain divided, with some supporting tougher punishment while others believe the original sentence was enough.
