Rwanda’s national football team, Amavubi, has moved its preparations to Egypt after friendly matches that were scheduled to take place in Morocco were cancelled.
The announcement was made by the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA), which informed football fans that the planned international friendly games in Marrakech would no longer be played during the June 2026 FIFA international window.
The change comes after football authorities in Morocco reportedly informed FERWAFA that the matches could not go ahead because of safety concerns linked to the Ebola outbreak reported in parts of the region.
Amavubi Move to Egypt for Continued Preparation
Despite the cancellation of the friendly matches, Rwanda’s national team will continue its training program as planned.
FERWAFA explained that preparations for upcoming competitions remain on schedule, with the team relocating its camp to Cairo, Egypt.
The federation said some members of the Amavubi delegation had already arrived in Marrakech on June 1, 2026, before receiving news that the matches would not take place.
As a result, the team adjusted its plans and decided to continue preparations in Egypt.
Rwanda Focuses on AFCON 2027 Qualification
The training camp is an important part of Rwanda’s preparations for future international competitions, including qualification matches for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Coaches and team officials are expected to use the camp to assess players, improve team performance, and build strong preparations ahead of competitive fixtures.
Meanwhile, football supporters hope the team will make the most of the training opportunity despite the unexpected changes.
Efforts Underway to Arrange New Friendly Matches
FERWAFA says efforts are continuing to find alternative friendly matches while the team remains in Egypt.
Friendly games are considered important because they help players gain experience, improve teamwork, and prepare for competitive tournaments.
Officials are reportedly exploring different options that would allow Amavubi to face other national teams during the international break.
If new matches are confirmed, supporters are expected to receive updates from the federation.
Football Fans Remain Hopeful
Although many fans were disappointed by the cancellation of the Morocco matches, there is optimism that the team will still benefit from the training camp in Egypt.
Supporters believe the camp offers an opportunity for players to stay focused and continue preparing for important competitions ahead.
The federation has also reassured football fans that the national team’s long-term goals remain unchanged despite the disruption.
