Rwanda launched electric buses to transport airport passengers in Kigali.

The Rwanda airport electric buses trial has officially started to help passengers traveling to and from Kigali International Airport.

The pilot project was launched on Monday, 18 May 2026, by Ecofleet Solutions in partnership with the Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority.

The buses are currently operating on the route from Kigali International Airport through Chez Lando, Gishushu, KABC, Park Inn, Urban by CityBlue, BPR, and Serena Hotel in Kigali City.

Rwanda Airport Electric Buses Use 100% Electricity

According to Ecofleet Solutions, the new buses use 100% electric power and are mainly meant for passengers arriving at or leaving Kigali International Airport.

The buses will especially help travelers heading to different hotels in Kigali.

Ecofleet communication officer Havugimana Aldo explained that the buses will operate depending on flight schedules.

This means passengers staying at hotels will be able to use the buses based on the departure time of their flights.

Trial Phase Continues Before Official Launch

Officials said the current phase is only a test to check whether the buses can properly follow airport schedules before the service is fully launched.

Ecofleet also explained that ticket prices are still being studied and will be announced after the testing phase is completed.

Special bus stops have already been placed along the route to help passengers easily access the service.

The buses will only transport people traveling to or from Kigali International Airport.

Rwanda Promotes Modern and Green Transport

The launch of the Rwanda airport electric buses comes as Rwanda continues investing in modern and environmentally friendly transport systems.

Ecofleet said the buses will give passengers another transport option besides regular taxis and private airport vehicles.

The company added that the project could help visitors reduce travel costs when moving between the airport and hotels.

Regular public buses and other airport transport services will continue operating normally.

Rwanda Receives More International Visitors

The trial comes at a time when Rwanda is hosting several international events.

Among them is the Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit for Africa, taking place from 19 to 21 May 2026.

Rwanda is also preparing to host the BAL 2026 finals from 22 to 31 May 2026 for the fifth time.

Officials believe the new electric buses could improve transport services for tourists, conference guests, and other international visitors.
