Genocide Victims Found at Rwanda School
More than 70 bodies believed to belong to genocide victims were found at a school in Nyamagabe District.

Genocide victims found at Rwanda school shocked residents in Nyamagabe District after more than 70 bodies were discovered at GS Anibale School in Kaduha Sector. Local authorities and genocide survivors’ groups say the search for more remains may continue.

The bodies are believed to belong to victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

How Genocide Victims Were Found at Rwanda School

The discovery started during construction work inside the school compound.

Workers who were preparing land for new buildings first discovered around 25 bodies buried underground.

After the news spread, residents, local leaders, and members of Ibuka organized a community search operation on 21 May 2026.

During that search, around 50 more bodies were found at the same location.

This discovery increased fears that the school area may have been used as a mass burial site during the genocide.

Ibuka Speaks About Genocide Victims Found at Rwanda School

Alexis Hakizimana, the president of Ibuka in Kaduha Sector, said it is painful that many genocide victims are still being discovered more than 30 years later.

He explained that some people may still be hiding important information about where victims were buried.

Hakizimana urged residents to help authorities by sharing any information that could help find more bodies.

He also promised that every victim discovered would receive a respectful burial.

Schools and Churches Became Hiding Places During Genocide

Local leaders believe many victims escaped to schools and churches hoping to find protection during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Sadly, many people were later attacked and killed in those same places.

Authorities say the latest discovery is another reminder of the painful history Rwanda continues to uncover.

Rwanda Continues Searching for Genocide Burial Sites

The discovery of genocide victims found at Rwanda school shows that Rwanda is still searching for hidden burial sites connected to the genocide.

Officials say these efforts are important for giving dignity to victims, helping survivors find closure, and preserving Rwanda’s history.
