The tragic incident happened on the night of 24 May 2026 in Ntarabana Sector, Rulindo District, where two men reportedly entered an illegal mining site searching for minerals before the ground collapsed on them.
Police confirmed that one body was recovered while rescue teams continued searching for the second person believed to still be trapped underground.
Illegal Mining Collapse in Rulindo Happened at Night
According to local authorities, the two men had gone to the mining area during the night without official permission or proper safety equipment.
The accident happened in Rusine area, especially around Kajevuba Cell in Ntarabana Sector, a place where illegal mining activities have often been reported in recent years.
Residents said the area has previously experienced dangerous mining accidents linked to unregulated mineral extraction.
Police Warn Against Illegal Mining Activities
The spokesperson of Rwanda National Police in Northern Province, IP Ngirabakunzi Ignace, confirmed the incident and said rescue operations started immediately after authorities received information about the collapse.
He explained that one victim was found dead while efforts to locate the second person were still continuing.
Police also warned residents against taking part in illegal mining activities because of the serious risks involved.
Authorities said many illegal miners enter unsafe underground pits without protective equipment, increasing the chances of deadly accidents.

Authorities Encourage Safe and Legal Mining
Police urged residents to work only with licensed mining companies that follow safety regulations and government standards.
Officials also encouraged citizens to share information with local authorities whenever they notice dangerous or illegal mining activities in their communities.
Community leaders say awareness campaigns will continue to help prevent more deaths linked to unsafe mining operations.
Illegal Mining Remains a Serious Challenge
Illegal mining continues to be a major concern in several parts of Rwanda, especially in areas known for mineral deposits.
Experts say many people enter illegal mining because of unemployment and the hope of earning quick money, even though the work is extremely dangerous.
Mining accidents caused by weak tunnels, lack of equipment, and poor safety conditions have led to injuries and deaths in different regions over the years.
Authorities continue asking the public to respect mining laws and avoid putting their lives at risk.
