Two female students from EAV/Gitwe School were arrested after a school mentor was seriously injured

Two female students from EAV/Gitwe School in Ngoma District have been arrested after they were accused of attacking and injuring their female school mentor, locally known as an Animatrice.

The incident happened during the night of 6 May 2026 in Rukira Sector, Kibatsi Cell, Rugaragara Village, where the school is located.

Authorities identified the two students as Clarisse and Shallon, both aged 20.

The case has attracted attention in the local community after reports said the mentor suffered serious injuries and was rushed to hospital for treatment.

What Happened at the School

According to local leaders, the students had returned from evening revision classes before the incident happened.

Reports say the two girls were angry after the mentor reportedly informed their parents about their behavior at school. However, the mentor allegedly did not know they were upset with her.

After returning to the dormitory area where students sleep, the two students allegedly attacked the mentor and beat her badly.

Local residents said the attack shocked many students and teachers because such violence is uncommon at the school.

Police and Local Leaders Confirm Arrest

The Executive Secretary of Rukira Sector, Buhiga Rwumbuguza Josué, confirmed the arrests while speaking to local media.

He explained that after the incident, the two girls first escaped from the school compound and hid in nearby farms close to the school.

He said:

“We received the information during the night, but they had already escaped.”

Local authorities later organized a search operation together with students and community members. After several hours, the suspects were found and handed over to investigators from the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) at Rukira Station.

School Mentor Seriously Injured

Authorities said the school mentor, identified as Ceraphine, suffered serious injuries during the attack.

She was immediately taken to a health facility for medical care.

At the moment, officials have not yet shared full details about her current health condition, but local leaders confirmed she received urgent treatment after the incident.

The case has raised concern among parents and education officials about discipline and student behavior in schools.

Calls for Better Student Discipline

Following the incident, local leaders urged students to respect school rules and avoid violence when disagreements happen.

Rwumbuguza asked students to show discipline and good behavior while at school. He also encouraged teachers and school mentors to stay close to students and continue guiding them peacefully.

Education officials believe stronger communication between schools, students, and parents can help prevent similar situations in the future.

Violence in Schools Raises Concern

Cases of violence in schools are rare in Rwanda, but when they happen, they often create fear among parents and communities.

Many people online expressed sadness after hearing that a school mentor was allegedly attacked by students she was responsible for guiding and protecting.

Some community members said students today face emotional pressure, while others argued that schools must strengthen discipline and counseling programs.

Experts say schools should continue teaching students peaceful ways to solve disagreements without using violence.

Investigation Continues

The Rwanda Investigation Bureau is continuing investigations into the incident.

The two students remain in custody as authorities gather more information about what exactly happened before the attack.

Officials have not yet announced when the suspects will appear before court.
