On Friday, October 3, 2025, President Paul Kagame gave strong advice to new officers during a ceremony at Gako Military Academy in Bugesera District. He reminded them to serve Rwanda with discipline and responsibility while warning against bad habits such as drinking alcohol and using drugs.

The event marked the graduation of the 12th intake of officers. In total, 557 students completed a one-year course, 248 finished a short course, 182 completed a four-year program, and 42 studied in military schools abroad.

Kagame Praises the New Officers

As the Commander-in-Chief of the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), Kagame congratulated the graduates who were commissioned as Sous-Lieutenants. He praised their effort, discipline, and hard training.

He also thanked the trainers and Rwanda’s partner countries that helped in the education of these officers. Kagame further expressed gratitude to the parents who supported their children in joining this respected profession.

“Your duty is to protect Rwanda and all Rwandans,” Kagame said. “You must ensure that the country remains secure and never falls into the hands of those who wish it harm.”

Discipline and Service to the Nation

The President reminded the officers that their role requires sacrifice and discipline. He explained that the world is changing, bringing many challenges, but they must remain firm and act with integrity.

Kagame encouraged the officers to stay on the right path and be ready to face any challenges. He said their training had prepared them to deal with difficulties and win against any trials.

Warning Against Alcohol and Drugs

One of the main points Kagame raised was the danger of alcohol and drugs. He warned the officers that these habits destroy discipline and can lead to failure in their duties.

“Avoid drunkenness and drinking alcohol that confuses your mind. When you lose focus, you also fail to fulfill your duties,” he said.
“Drug abuse is worse; when someone loses clear thinking, they can no longer serve properly. We do not want all your hard work to be wasted because of such bad habits.”

He stressed that no achievement should be destroyed by alcohol, drugs, or other negative behavior.

25 Years of Military Training at Gako

Gako Military Academy, located in Bugesera District, has been training officers for 25 years. It has produced many officers for Rwanda and also trained students from foreign countries.

The school continues to be a pillar in strengthening Rwanda’s defence system by preparing young men and women for military leadership.

Conclusion

President Kagame’s message was clear: discipline, sacrifice, and responsibility are the foundation of a strong army. By avoiding alcohol and drugs, new officers will remain focused on their duty to protect Rwanda and its people.
