Eight candidates start campaigns for Uganda’s 2026 presidential election

On 29 September 2025, Uganda launched the official campaign period for the 2026 presidential election. Campaigns will continue until 12 January 2026, a few days before voting.

The electoral commission confirmed that eight candidates will contest the presidency. Among them are President Yoweri Museveni, Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), Mugisha Muntu, and Mubaraka Munyagwa.

Museveni Opens Campaign With NRM

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, is running again with the National Resistance Movement (NRM).

On the first day, the NRM held a major meeting where Museveni launched the party’s official manifesto, outlining his campaign promises.

Bobi Wine Gathers Strong Support

Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, is the candidate for the National Unity Platform (NUP). He is considered Museveni’s biggest rival.

In the 2021 elections, Bobi Wine gained 35% of the vote, while Museveni secured 58%. His 2026 campaign started in the Busoga region in eastern Uganda, then moved to Jinja in the north, drawing large crowds of supporters wearing red berets.

Other Candidates in the 2026 Uganda Election

General Mugisha Muntu, leader of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), is among the candidates. Known for his discipline and leadership style, Muntu appeals to professional groups and civil society.

Mubaraka Munyagwa of the Common Man’s Party also joined the race. Before beginning his campaign in Kawempe, he prayed at Bwaise Mosque in Kampala and shared a meal with his supporters.

Museveni vs Bobi Wine: Main Contest Expected

As campaigns continue, many observers expect the main battle to be between Museveni and Bobi Wine. Museveni has ruled Uganda for nearly 40 years, but Bobi Wine has become popular with young voters demanding change.

Bobi Wine entered politics in 2017 as a Member of Parliament and built a strong base through his “People Power” movement.

Uganda to Vote in January 2026

The presidential election will be held in January 2026. Until then, campaigns will bring rallies, debates, and close monitoring by security forces.

This election is crucial for Uganda, as voters will decide whether Museveni remains in power or if a new leader like Bobi Wine or another candidate will take charge.
