Rwanda passenger drones launched for first time in Africa
Rwanda unveils passenger drones, the first in Africa, to promote eco-friendly transport and tourism

Rwanda Passenger Drones Officially Launched

Rwanda passenger drones were unveiled on September 3, 2025, marking the first time in Africa that this type of aircraft has been introduced. The event took place ahead of the Aviation Africa 2025 conference, a two-day summit bringing together more than 80 aviation companies from across the continent.

The drones, known as eVTOLs, were manufactured by EHang, a Chinese company leading in autonomous aerial vehicles. These electric drones are designed to operate without pilots, making them both modern and environmentally friendly.

Features of Rwanda Passenger Drones

The new Rwanda passenger drones are fully powered by 100% electricity. Each drone can:

  • Carry two passengers or over 620 kilograms of cargo

  • Fly up to 30 kilometers in distance
  • Stay in the air for 25 minutes per charge
  • Reach a height of 100 meters
  • Use 12 rotors supported by four legs for safe balance
  • Detect obstacles with smart technology

This makes them suitable for short trips and tourism experiences, while also supporting Rwanda’s mission to cut down carbon emissions.

First Flight Experience

Melissa Rusanganwa, head of International Cooperation at the Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority (RCAA), became the first passenger to fly in the drone.

She explained:

“I felt safe and comfortable. The team guided us on safety instructions before take-off. This new technology will connect people from different places while also boosting tourism.”

According to her, the drones will make it easier for tourists to explore Rwanda’s beautiful destinations while also promoting eco-friendly transport.

Rwanda’s Commitment to Green Aviation

Rwanda has already been using drones for medical deliveries since 2016 through Zipline Rwanda, which transports blood, vaccines, and medicines to hospitals and clinics. These medical drones have covered over 160 kilometers per trip and delivered supplies to more than 650 health facilities.

The launch of Rwanda passenger drones shows the country’s commitment to advancing air mobility. It builds on earlier successes and introduces a new level of innovation.

Investment and Future Plans

Each eVTOL passenger drone costs about $400,000, and Rwanda becomes the 21st country to adopt this technology. In 2024, EHang sold over 200 of these drones globally, and Rwanda is now positioning itself as a hub for drone innovation in Africa.

The government is also constructing a Drone Operation Centre in Huye District, Southern Province. This $10 million facility will handle drones of all sizes, including large ones similar to helicopters. Once complete, it will have the capacity to host up to 3,000 drones at once.

This centre will support:

  • Drone manufacturing
  • Drone testing
  • International research partnerships

Tourism and Economic Impact

Passenger drones are expected to attract tourists who want to explore Rwanda in a modern and safe way. The move also supports the country’s green growth strategy, reducing pollution by replacing fuel-powered transport with clean energy alternatives.
