Rwanda Welcomes First Group of Migrants

The Trump plan migrants to Rwanda has officially begun, as the first group of migrants was sent under this policy. The move is part of Trump’s migration strategy, which has raised debate both in Rwanda and internationally.

According to Rwanda’s Government Spokesperson Yolande Makolo, the group arrived in August 2025. She explained that three of them want to return to their home countries, while four others have chosen to start a new life in Rwanda.

She said, “No matter what their situation is, Rwanda will provide them with security and support.”

What Is Trump’s Migration Plan?

Former President Donald Trump introduced strict policies to deal with illegal migration. Millions of people were living in the US without documents, and Trump promised to send them back home or relocate them to partner countries.

Under this agreement, Rwanda agreed to host up to 250 migrants sent from the US. Reports from Reuters confirmed that the US has already shared a list of 10 more people who may soon be sent to Rwanda.

Rwanda’s Experience Hosting Migrants

This is not the first time Rwanda has hosted migrants. The country has a history of supporting vulnerable groups from across Africa.

Between 2019 and 2025, Rwanda welcomed around 3,000 African migrants who had been trapped in Libya while trying to cross to Europe. Many of them have since been resettled in different countries, while others are still living in Gashora refugee camp in Bugesera District.

Rwanda also signed an agreement with the United Kingdom to host asylum seekers, but that deal was cancelled before it could be implemented.

Life for the New Migrants in Rwanda

The seven migrants now in Rwanda will receive housing, healthcare, and basic support. Rwanda has promised to protect them and help them integrate into local communities.

Government officials say Rwanda is committed to upholding human rights and offering safe shelter for people in need. Some of the migrants are still considering their long-term plans, but Rwanda says they are free to choose between returning home or staying to build their future.

Looking Ahead

The arrival of this first group sent to Rwanda under Trump’s plan is just the beginning. If the agreement continues, more people will be relocated in the coming months.

Rwanda’s decision reflects its role as a responsible partner in global migration issues, even though the benefits of the deal are not yet clear.
