USA Withdraws from UNESCO by 2026

USA withdraws from UNESCO — a decision officially announced by the U.S. State Department. America says staying in the UN’s cultural body is no longer in its national interest, especially due to disagreements over Palestine’s membership and UNESCO’s development goals.

Why Is the USA Leaving UNESCO?

Key Reason: National Interest Comes First

The U.S. government said that UNESCO focuses too much on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These global goals aim to improve the world through education, equality, and climate action.

But the U.S. says these goals don’t fit its own plans, which focus more on national priorities.

Palestine’s Membership Is a Big Issue

Another major reason is that UNESCO accepted Palestine as a full member state, something the U.S. strongly disagrees with. America believes this decision spreads anti-Israel politics at the global level, which goes against U.S. foreign policy.

What the U.S. Plans to Do Next

The United States says it will always protect its own interests first before taking part in international organizations like UNESCO.

It cited Article 2, Section 6 of the UNESCO Constitution, which gives member states the right to leave the organization.

So, the U.S. will stop being a member on December 31, 2026. Until then, it will still be part of UNESCO activities.

Will This Impact UNESCO’s Work?

This is not the first time America has left UNESCO. It also pulled out in 2018, then returned in 2023. These exits often come from political disagreements, especially about Israel and Palestine.

UNESCO has not yet made a full public response to this decision.
