Kassim Yussuf, Veteran Radio Rwanda Journalist, Dies at 68.
Radio Rwanda has lost one of its most respected voices. Radio Rwanda journalist Kassim Yussuf passed away on Monday, August 25, 2025, after battling illness for several days.
Yussuf was a veteran broadcaster with the Rwanda Broadcasting Agency (RBA), known especially for presenting French-language news and entertainment programs. His passing marks the end of a long career that shaped Rwanda’s radio culture.
From Samedi Détente to French News
Kassim Yussuf became widely recognized in 1998 when he replaced journalist Agnes Murebwayire on the famous Radio Rwanda entertainment program Samedi Détente. The show was one of the most loved radio programs in Rwanda, bringing together families and young listeners every weekend.
From that time, Yussuf became a household name. He continued working on French news broadcasts at Radio Rwanda while also covering other areas such as sports and entertainment. His ability to connect with listeners made him one of the most respected radio figures in Rwanda.

News of his death was announced on Monday morning, August 25, 2025. Colleagues and fellow journalists expressed their sadness and shared their memories of working with him.
RBA journalist Kayishema Thierry wrote:
“Rest in peace, elder Kassim Yussuf ‘KAYUS.’ A great journalist of Radio Rwanda who brought us quality French news, sports, and entertainment through Samedi Détente.”
Another journalist, Mutuyeyezu Oswald (Oswakim) from RadioTV10, added:
“We loved Kassim Yussuf for his work on Samedi Détente. May God receive him in His kingdom.”
Burial in Nyamirambo
Family members confirmed that Kassim Yussuf would be laid to rest on Monday afternoon at Nyamirambo cemetery. Friends, colleagues, and fans of his work are expected to attend his funeral to pay their last respects.
