Preacher Arrested After Asking People for Money to Avoid Death

The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has arrested Bucyanayandi, a man claiming to be a preacher, after he allegedly asked people to give him money so they would not die or get sick. His arrest was confirmed on October 21, 2025, through a post on RIB’s official X (formerly Twitter) account.

According to RIB, the preacher scared people with false messages, telling them to give money or face death and misfortune. He also promised that whoever gave him money would receive five times more in return as a “miracle reward.”

RIB Warns Public Against False Preachers

RIB and the Rwanda National Police urged citizens not to believe in such fake teachings. They said that these self-proclaimed pastors use fear to steal from innocent people.

RIB stated:

“We ask Rwandans to ignore messages that promise miracles in exchange for money. These preachers aim to take your property and mislead you. Focus on your work and continue improving your life.”

Officials warned that people who pretend to be prophets and deceive others for money will face serious legal action.

Fake Miracle Promises and Fear Messages

Videos shared on social media showed Bucyanayandi telling followers to bring large sums of money to the “house of God.” In one clip, he claimed to see a coffin in someone’s home and said only money could stop their death.

He said:

“I see a coffin in your house. Bring one million francs you withdrew from the bank, and God will remove death from your home.”

He also told worshippers to take everything they had from their pockets and bring it forward, promising that God would multiply it five times soon.

These claims shocked many online users, with some calling for strong action against such misleading messages that take advantage of vulnerable people.

RIB Takes Legal Action

After the videos spread online, RIB quickly launched an investigation. The suspect was later arrested in Remera, Kigali, and is currently being held at the RIB Remera Station.

RIB confirmed that his case file is being prepared and will soon be handed over to the National Public Prosecution Authority for further legal action.

RIB emphasized that Rwanda will not tolerate people who misuse religion to cheat or mislead citizens.

Government Continues to Monitor Religious Activities

This case has reignited discussions about the need to regulate unregistered churches and self-proclaimed preachers. Authorities say that all religious leaders must follow the law and ensure that their teachings promote honesty, peace, and development.

Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious activities or any person claiming to perform miracles in exchange for money.
