A family in Bushenge Sector, Nyamasheke District, is now left without a home after their house was completely destroyed by a fire on Monday afternoon, November 10, 2025. The incident happened around 3:00 PM in Gitwa village, Gasheke cell, and left nothing behind.
Local leaders confirmed that the fire was likely caused by an electrical fault. Luckily, all four family members who lived in the house survived since they were away at work when the tragedy occurred.
Officials Confirm the Incident
According to Habumugisha Hycinthe, the Executive Secretary of Bushenge Sector, they received a report that a family’s house had caught fire and everything inside was destroyed.
“We got information that the house caught fire and burned down completely with all its contents,” he said.
He added that the total loss is estimated at 3,262,000 Rwandan francs. The fire is suspected to have started due to electric wires used to charge a phone battery, which may have caused a short circuit.
What the Family Lost
All items inside the house were reduced to ashes. The list includes:
-
House roofing and iron sheets
-
Doors and windows
-
Clothes and shoes
-
Furniture, beds, and chairs
-
Household items like cooking pots, food, and personal items
These losses have left the family with nothing but hope and the support of local authorities.
Authorities Provide Support
The Bushenge sector office confirmed that the family is being assisted with temporary shelter while further help is being arranged. Local residents also joined hands to offer food, clothes, and basic items to the affected family.
The sector leadership said they are working closely with the District Disaster Management Committee to provide the needed support and ensure that similar incidents do not happen again.
Cause of the Fire
Preliminary findings suggest that poor electrical wiring or unsafe phone charging methods might have triggered the fire. Authorities have since reminded residents to:
-
Avoid connecting wires directly to batteries.
-
Switch off electrical devices when not in use.
-
Use certified electricians when installing or repairing home power lines.
The local government urged the public to report any electrical danger immediately to prevent such accidents in the future.
Community Reaction
Neighbors expressed sadness over the incident, saying it was a big loss for the family and the entire community. One neighbor said,
“We are thankful no one was hurt, but it is painful to see everything they owned gone in minutes.”
Government’s Next Steps
Authorities in Nyamasheke District said they will continue raising awareness about fire prevention and encourage people to insure their homes and property. The government is also working to improve electricity safety measures across rural areas.
