Tragic Mining Accident in Butare
On Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at around 2:00 PM, two men were trapped when a gemstone pit collapsed in Byimana Village, Rwambogo Cell, Butare Sector, Rwanda.
The victims were Tuyishime Wilson, 24, from Rushwati Village, Nyamihana Cell, and Habumukiza Alexis, 45, from Kirwano Village, Nyamihanda Cell.
Victims Worked for New Kush Rwanda Ltd
UMUSEKE confirmed that both men worked for New Kush Rwanda Ltd, a gemstone mining company. According to reports, the pit collapsed while they were working, and rescuers found them dead when they tried to pull them out.
The Executive Secretary of Butare Sector, Ntibizera Jean Pierre, confirmed the incident and said the company immediately informed the local authorities.
“Yes, two people were trapped while mining. This information came from the company representative at New Kush Rwanda Ltd,” said Ntibizera.
Families Mourn, Safety Concerns Raised
Ntibizera added that it is unclear whether the company has insurance coverage for its employees. He urged residents to prioritize safety while working in mines and reassured the families affected by the tragedy.
“We first comforted the families and are awaiting information about the company’s insurance. Accidents like this are unpredictable, so safety precautions are crucial,” he said.
The sector official reminded people to always exercise caution and ensure that their work environment does not put lives at risk.
RIB Investigates
The miners were extracting gold at the time of the accident. Their bodies were transported to Mibirizi Hospital for examination.
Meanwhile, the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) is actively investigating the case to determine the exact cause of the collapse and ensure accountability.
