DASSO Officers Caught Using ChatGPT in Rwanda’s National Exam

In Rwanda’s Ngoma District, two officers from the District Administration Security Support Organ (DASSO) were caught cheating in the national examination using artificial intelligence tools, specifically ChatGPT. The two officers, who were taking the exams as private candidates, were found using a mobile phone equipped with AI to generate answers during the test.

This incident took place at ASPEK School, where the national exams are being held. According to local reports, the officers were not official students of the school but had registered as independent candidates. How the DASSO Officers Used AI Tools During the Exam

ChatGPT and AI Phone Caught in Action.

According to sources, the two DASSO officers were found using a smartphone during the exam, which had ChatGPT installed. ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, is an advanced language model that can quickly generate text and answer questions — making it a tool that can be misused for cheating if not controlled.

The use of such technology during official exams is strictly forbidden by Rwanda’s examination body, the National Examination and School Inspection Authority (NESA). The officers reportedly relied on this AI tool to solve questions and copy answers while pretending to take the test like other candidates.

District Officials Speak Out.

The head of DASSO in Ngoma District confirmed the incident in an interview with Flash TV and Radio. He said that the two officers were caught red-handed during the exam session but were allowed to continue taking the remaining tests. However, he also stated that disciplinary action will be taken once the exams are finished.

“We didn’t want to disturb the exam process, so we allowed them to continue,” he said. “But we have reported the issue to NESA, and after the exams, there will be consequences according to the national exam rules.”

What NESA Says About Exam Cheating Using AI.

NESA has already taken strong positions against cheating in exams, especially the use of digital and smart tools. According to their policies, any use of unauthorized devices, including mobile phones and AI tools like ChatGPT, is a serious offense.

In previous years, NESA has expelled candidates caught with phones, cheat sheets, or receiving outside help. This case, involving DASSO officers, raises concerns about AI misuse and integrity in national testing.

Technology and Ethics in Education

This incident has sparked a bigger conversation in Rwanda about the ethical use of technology in education. While tools like ChatGPT can be helpful for studying, they can also be misused if not guided properly.

Educational institutions are now being encouraged to strengthen their monitoring systems and invest in AI detection tools to prevent such cheating attempts in future exams.
